Part three of the 2014 FFL Season Preview sees us reviewing
The Tom Dogs
New Coach. New team name. New attitude. Same old story of being so close and yet so far? Time will tell.
Rossoce Markey Mark and The Funky Bunch has officially handed over the reigns to the FFL's youngest human coach - Tommy Dog, in what looms as an intruiging season for the Tom Dogs.
Rossie has come so close, so many times but just failing towards the business end of the season. Last year, The Three Kings were solid, yet inconsistent and this proved to their achilles heel.
This year, Tommy Dog took charge at draft day and he has certainly made some interesting draft selections. However, their lineup still looks very strong with solid midfielders in Ryan Griffin, Brendon Goddard, Kane Cornes and perennial draftee, Scott Thompson from Adelaide. Up front, they boast last season's Coleman Medallist, the Orange Roughie, as well as another couple of team regulars in Brent Harvey and Jonathan Brown. James Kelly will be magic as their tackler and with Mike Pyke in the ruck they have an interesting team.
Can the Tom Dogs overcome the late season failings and make it to the top of the pile? As always, time will tell.
Prediction: The Tom Dogs could make a strong showing for the finals.
And into the 2013 top five teams.
Such Is Life
Dr Shaun has been extremely successful since joining the FFL in 2009. One premierships and several finals appearances is testimony to the good Doctor's coaching ability. But can he get back to the pinnacle of the FFL and take the crown?
Tex Walker appears to be more injured than first thought and is not expected back til round 15 so this does leave some thinking for Dr Shaun to do, in order to cover Tex's loss from the team. The Dish is a very capable forward and will do well whilst Eddie Betts is sure to do well for the Lifers, certainly early on until he proves himself.
Michael Barlow, Travis Boak and Matty Priddis look to be the making of a very solid midfield and in the ruck the Lifers have Matty Kreuzer, Robbie Warnock and Mark Jamar available for selection, assuming they are both injury free.
Zac Dawson represents a very capable one percenter option and overall, this looks a solid, if, unusually for Dr Shaun, a somewhat unspectacular team. Normally the good Doctor enjoys a bad boy or two in his team to fire up the lads and this year, well, it's really just Hayden Ballantyne to create havoc and perhaps an argument between Rory Sloane and Matty Priddis to determine who looks most like a poodle, likely to cause any issue.
Why did Jake King not get drafted by Such Is Life? It just doesn't seem right really. Sha
Prediction: Very likely that Such Is Life will be looking for the top five again this season.
